Breathing A Sigh of Relief for My Dear Friend

It was on Thursday when my friend Elsie was finally discharged from the hospital. She was admitted on Sunday when her asthma reared its ugly head again, a condition that has been a life-long struggle for her, this time triggered and exacerbated by the sudden change in weather here which can go from super hot to super cool, and vice versa, in the blink of an eye.

I visited her on Tuesday and I was surprised to see her using a nebulizer. She was having difficulty breathing because her air passages were blocked by phlegm. Using the nebulizer gives her temporary relief and she uses it every four hours. She’s on IV antibiotics, but until the medicine could do its work and take effect, she still had to resort to using the nebulizer.

It's amazing that such a simple little piece of personal equipment can be such a life saver. But even more amazing was the array of medical equipment in her hospital room that the doctors and nurses used to monitor her well being and progress. It's a wonderful age of medical marvels and miracles we've been blessed with.

I saw her again on Friday, just the day after she was discharged, and I was happy to see her well and good. You go, girl! You have many more years ahead and many more roads to travel.
