Heart Palpitations

Heart palpitations are an uncomfortable sensation that your heart is beating rapidly and/or irregularly.

Heart palpitations can feel like:
- A pounding or fluttering feeling in your chest.
- A feeling that your heart is doing a 'flip-flop," or that it is skipping or missing a beat.
- Your heart is racing, or there is an extra heartbeat.
- Your heart is beating in your neck.

Although palpitations may be caused by a heart problem, they often occur because of stress, fatigue, or overuse of alcohol or stimulants (caffeine, nicotine). People who experience severe anxiety may have heart palpitations. Many medications, including diet pills, antihistamines, and decongestants, can cause heart palpitations.
